The Academy of Art & Design in Offenbach has been a college of art and design with university status since 1970, but it dates back to an institution founded in 1832. The academy makes use of an open approach, because the fine arts, media studies and applied design are accorded the same degree of importance in terms of both teaching and integrative development. The interaction of theory and design, experiment and product as well as new and old techniques in image production is regarded as an important factor.
The concept of reality in art, design and media has been highly influenced by developments in cross-medial and cross-cultural convergences. This connection has been applied to the structure of the courses, because the overall aim is to train artists and designers to master professional demands that are constantly changing. Degrees can be taken in the areas of art, communication design, media studies, stage design and product design.
