The Frankfurt College of Music and Performing Arts was founded in 1878 and has its origins in the “Dr. Hoch’s Conservatory”, an endowment made by the Frankfurt citizen Joseph Paul Hoch. The university quickly became an internationally acclaimed educational centre for composers, soloists, conductors, orchestral musicians and music teachers. After the end of World War II and the resumption of teaching in 1947, the university expanded its profile and has also offered courses in opera, drama, theatre direction and ballet since then. Today, there are approximately 800 students enrolled at the University of Music and Performing Arts who are taught by about 400 professors, lecturers and instructors, all of whom enjoy international distinction in their respective fields. The overall aim of the college is to train young performers to the highest standards of excellence and it perceives art being an essential social force. The college has flexible and transparent curricula and also offers practice-based training.
