Public research institutes are also part of the German system of higher education – they form a large part of the research potential. They are closely connected to the higher education system through numerous co-operations and joint appointments for leading positions at the research institutes as well as the universities. Synergy effects are created by carrying out research projects with universities as well as by sharing facilities and resources.
Hessen has a rich and long tradition of many highly competitive research institutes - only some of them are presented on the following pages. The broad spectrum of expertise, which is covered by the research institutes, ranges from natural sciences and medical research to engineering and the arts. These institutes are a major source of innovation and progress and are recognized both nationwide and internationally.
