The German system of higher education makes a variety of institutions available. These include universities of art and design.

Students who want to apply to a university of art and design have to fulfil demanding requirements, as a first step they have to hand in a portfolio which is rated by the faculty. Selected applicants are then invited for an aptitude test. Such tests consist of completing a series of practical, artistic and compositional tasks intended to show their overall ability.

Subjects differ from one art school to another. For example, courses at a conservatoire include composition, directing, training on an instrument, voice, and at some schools even church music, jazz, music theatre, stage dance, and music education. Art colleges put their focus on courses like painting, graphic design, sculpture, and art education. Additionally, they offer courses in architecture, stage design, ceramics, glass painting, restoration work, and art media. However, programs differ from one institution to the next and a few art colleges specialize in more narrowly defined curricula.
